The Health Sciences as Applied to Coaching Course will be a series of interactive exercises and activities designed to study Health Science as they apply to Coaching sports. Through these activities, exercises and health application to coaching topics, participants will gain information, organize it for professional and personal use, and apply it to their particular programs. Heath Sciences as applied to coaching will also help define: selected principles of biology, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and related to coaching; safety, first aid and care for athletic injuries: selection and classification of athletes-age-maturity.

The Philosophy and Principles of coaching course will be a series of interactive exercises and activities designed to study sport and coaching’s place in sport in a contemporary society from the informal to the “collegiate” level. Through these activities, exercises and analysis of coaching topics, participants will gain information, organize it for professional and personal use, and apply it to their particular programs. Philosophy and Principles of Coaching will also help to define the participant’s goals, values, and needs and determine where they are on the sport continuum. The course is formatted into 9 sessions using DVDs, study guides, related readings and exercises, in-course class activities with an in-class final exam on the last evening (45 hours)
This 30 -hour NYSED mandated course will be taught in 7-9 sessions. The first 2 sessions are two hours in duration with approximately 25 hours of self-study class work. The course is intended to provide a foundation for coaches who will or are going to coach at any level of competition. The course is designed with a series of DVDs & videos, power point presentations, readings, in-class activities and discussions. Participants will gain insights into the many intangibles of coaching that until now were only learned through trial and error experiences. The course addresses the commonalities of all sports, differences in levels of competition, the personal roles that coaches should exhibit, the professional roles expected and the organizational influences on the world of a coach. The course will begin with an introductory phase in which the basic concepts common to all sports will be discussed. Topics will include a history of interscholastic athletics in New York State. The objectives, rules, regulations and policies of athletics, as well as performance skills, technical information, and organization and management practices will also be covered. The special training and conditioning of athletes in specific sports, the fitting of equipment, specific safety pre-causations, and officiating methods will also be examined.
